First Year Teacher Discovers Supplies Make the Classroom

You can tell that Kymberli Cosner loves being a teacher. She lights up when you ask about her 4th grade science students.

“My students are diverse for sure,” she said. “They’re really energetic and they’re responding really well which is very exciting.”

Miss Cosner is also excited to create an environment where learning is fun. This is her first year as a teacher and it’s clear that she’s eager to create a classroom that is uniquely hers.

To create this classroom, Miss Cosner has purchased over $500 in supplies including ink, caddies for tables, lamination sheets, glue sticks, scissors, crayons, books, and other basic supplies.

“I purchased a lot and I’m still currently purchasing,” she said. “I didn’t really know what to expect as a first year teacher. I wasn’t sure until I went to my classroom what I was actually going to get and what I had to buy myself.”

Miss Cosner is looking for more funding for her classroom to support hands-on STEM projects and hands-on activities. She said that her students need these supplies to see how math and science are integrated together.

Miss Cosner works for the Imagine School At Evening Rose. Her school focuses on integrating lessons to improve character. Recently, their weekly focus for students was perseverance, how to keep going when things get tough. This is something that Miss Cosner and hundreds of thousands of teachers on AdoptAClassroom.org showcase while struggling to access the supplies they need to develop their classroom environment.

“My boyfriend probably thinks I buy too many supplies and at first he didn’t grasp why I needed to buy so many things,” she said. “Once he saw my finished classroom, he was like, ‘Oh, that’s why you spent so much time and money on your room.’”
